ON THE METHOD OF MAKING PACTS

There are various methods of forming a pact with a demon. Some methods are quite simple and can be easily enacted by a complete amateur. Other methods require the development of certain supernatural talents and occult abilities. To produce the most versatile book possible, we will cover the full range of approaches. This way, even a newcomer to the occult arts can engage in experimentation. Obviously, the more demanding pacts are the most powerful.

Preparations

No magical endeavor should be engaged upon without proper preparation, and that goes double for operations which will involve interactions with spirits. Here are the minimal steps that should be taken to ensure you are ready to make a pact.

1. Know exactly what you want to ask for. Take at least an hour to engage in brainstorming or free-form writing to decide on what will be the exact request to make of the spirit. Ideally, you should commit several days to this and have your exact pact down to the word. Words are very important here. Be sure to use a dictionary to look up the exact meanings of the things you are requesting. As many books on magic will warn you, words we tend to think of as synonymous are often actually quite severely different in the exact implications of their meaning. Make sure you understand the difference, for example, between fame and popularity. Charles Manson is famous, Fleetwood Mac is popular. Likewise, money, wealth, and prosperity are three vastly different things. Try to target the exact thing that you truly want. If you want long-term financial stability, don't just ask for a better job. A word of advice - don't be modest here. "Be bold, be bold, but not too bold..."

2. Decide who to work with. Look through the catalogs of spirits in the various old grimoires to find one who works in the department that deals with the things your desire. You can easily find catalogs of the Goetia free online and at any pagan or New Age bookstore. If you are an advanced practitioner, consider making a pact with a spirit you already have a strong working relationship with.

3. Find out what they want in return. If you can't communicate directly with spirits, put some time into researching the tastes and personality of the spirit you want to work with. Read books, search web forums, find out what experiences others have had and what kind of exchanges they recommend.

4. Perform divinations. It is always important to perform several divinations in preparation for a large magical undertaking such as the making of a pact. Divination includes methods such as scrying, tarot, and rune work. If you are not already accomplished at divination, you should consider asking a friend who is already advanced in this area or hiring someone to perform readings for you.

5. Immerse yourself in the spirit. It is always a good idea to spend anywhere from the 48 hours immediately before the date you have decided to make your pact to a full week thinking about the spirit you are preparing to call on.
